Ascites is the most frequent and hepatorenal syndrome the most lethal complication in liver cirrhosis. In recent years, major progress has been made regarding effective treatment of these complications, thus reducing mortality in patients.
This publication highlights and critically appraises recent achievements and novel advances, and at the same time provides the background needed to grasp novel concepts. Topics treated include complications of paracentesis, the right choice of plasma expanders, and selection of patients who will experience survival benefit from transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt. Hepatorenal syndrome, on the other hand, is responsible for a broad spectrum of manifestations caused acute kidney injury, which until recently was considered a lethal condition. Drug treatments to improve renal function and prolong survival are therefore also discussed, including important issues for clinical outcome which are still under debate. Moreover, the role of combined kidney-liver transplantation versus conventional liver-only transplantation is addressed, as well as the use of vaptans in hyponatremia and their controversial role in the treatment of ascites.
Renowned experts share their knowledge and expertise and provide an international perspective. Their contributions include up-to-date references and a bullet-point summary, making this publication most valuable for practitioners, clinicians and scientists in the field.

Publisher: Springer 2011 ISBN: 3642035027 PDF 208 pages 3.9 MB

Inflammation in gastrointestinal mucosa can remodel the topography of the overlying epithelium. If such inflammation is chronic, it has fundamental clinical consequences, the principal of which is premalignant metaplasia throughout the alimentary tract. Furthermore, mucosal inflammation, even if subtle, is the single most common pathway for GI cancer.

This book discusses all aspects of the relation between inflammation and GI cancer, from the basic science through to the translational science which is helping in the optimization of clinical management stgies. Among the topics considered are the impact of inherited syndromes; the roles of acid reflux, H. pylori, inflammatory bowel disease, and primary sclerosing cholangitis; screening stgies; targeted drug therapies; genetics; and the use of endoscopic methods. The authors are the best in their field, and this book is designed for the enthusiastic student as well as the professional in GI science and medicine.

Venous Embolization of the Liver: Radiologic and Surgical Practice explores the theoretical advantages and clinical implications for utilizing Venous Embolization techniques, including portal vein and hepatic vein embolization.
The practice of venous embolization of the liver was originally developed in Japan Dr. Makuuchi (one of the co-editors of this book) in 1990 and since then, the techniques reviewed in this book are practiced throughout the world and are now considered the “standard of care” at many hepatobiliary centres worldwide.
Venous Embolization of the Liver: Radiologic and Surgical Practice covers a multitude of topics, including: pertinent vascular (microscopic and macroscopic) and surgical anatomy, liver regeneration (including the atrophy-hypertrophy complex), historical perspectives of major hepatic resection, various hepatobiliary surgical procedures , factors affecting hypertrophy, pathophysiology of embolization and resection, embolization techniques (including approaches and embolic agents), the indications for embolization and resection (including pre-operative volumetric and functional assessment and post-embolization followup), potential complications, outcomes data for different , recently advocated stgies (including “definitive” treatment of hepaellular carcinoma using portal vein embolization after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization) and future perspectives.
This book is a valuable resource for interventional radiologists and hepatobiliary surgeons who perform the embolization procedures and liver resections. Venous Embolization of the Liver: Radiologic and Surgical Practice can also be used secondarily diagnostic radiologists, medical oncologists specializing in gastrointestinal malignancies, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, liver transplant surgeons and basic scientists interested in liver regeneration physiology research.
